The Great Stone Church was one of the last buildings to be constructed on the Mission property.

This time, instead of buildingwith adobe bricks, stone was used. The Church was designed in shape of a cross.

The nave, the main part of the Church, is facing you. This magnificent structure took 9 years to completed

and, when it was dedicated in 1806, it was considered at the time to be the largest and loveliest building

in all of California. It was to stand only 6 years. The destruction of the Church came on December 8, 1812.

An earthquake struck during early morning service. 42 people died in this terrible event.

The Church, for the most part, has stood untouched and unused ever since.

Preservation work was begun on these ruins in 1989 and rededicated on July 28, 2004.

This building is an attempt to replace the Great Stone Church that was destroyed by the earthquake of 1812.

On February 14, 2000, Pope John Paul 2 proclaimed this parish church a Basilica, thus designating

this site as a special place of pilgrimage to Roman Catholics throughout the world.
